solipsistic NATION No. 61: Ultimae Records

October 26, 2007 | 8 Comments

Ultimae RecordsOn this week’s solipsistic NATION we’re joined by Sunbeam of Ultimae Records and we’ll hear songs she has selected from the roster of artists on her label.

I first found out about Ultimae Records while listening to Fake Science’s Lab Report Podcast and I was immediately enchanted with the label. Ultimae Records releases music that is sometimes ambient, sometimes downtempo, sometimes uptempo but always haunting and beautiful. That’s quite an accomplishment because there are many labels with the same aspirations as Ultimae Records but they fall short because they lack either the caliber of artists on Ultimae Records or the consistency of quality releases. Where other labels fail Ultimae Records succeeds because all their releases are deep and luxurious.

Sadly, Fake Science are closing their online store but I’m grateful that they turned me on to Ultimae Records.

solipsistic NATION No. 60: Delicate

October 19, 2007 | 2 Comments

DelicateI was waiting for a rainy day to record today’s show because all the music is so delicate and beautiful. But I live in San Diego and rainy days in Southern California are rare. It’s difficult to listen to music that’s fragile or moody when the sun is always shining. Sometimes you need overcast skies or fog to accompany that kind of music but as luck would have it, it rained.

Today’s show is dedicated to Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge, wife of industrial music pioneer Genesis P-Orridge and member of Psychic TV. She died of heart failure last Tuesday. My condolences to go out to Genesis P-Orridge and his family.

solipsistic NATION No. 59: Synthpop

October 12, 2007 | 8 Comments

SynthpopOne of the things I love about solipsistic NATION is that I can spend an entire show focusing on a specific genre. Electronic music rapidly mutates into ever new genres so that keeps the show fresh. I can also get reacquainted with established genres like dub or grime, which is always fun. But electronic music encompasses a lot of sub-genres and it is easy to overlook some of them. Take today’s show, which features synthpop. It would have never occurred to me to do such a show until Kevin Thrasher emailed a request for an all synthpop edition of solipsistic NATION.

I was a teen during the 80s so synthpop was part of the soundtrack of my life during those years. While I enjoyed the pop stylings of bands like Flock of Seagulls and Depeche Mode the stuff I really enjoyed was a lot darker and definitely more twisted. Wire, for example, twisted the genre beyond recognition with their album, The Ideal Copy. Alice Cooper kept within the boundaries of synthpop but infected it with his madness with Flush the Fashion.

With year two of solipsistic NATION I’ve decided to have more guest DJs on the show. Who better to co-host this week’s synthpop edition of solipsistic NATION than Mikel O.D. of the Most People Are DJs podcast? Mikel plays a great selection of music on his show but he’s got a special love for synthpop. The fact that he did all the hard work while I got to goof off was a bonus!

solipsistic NATION No. 58: Oscillation

October 5, 2007 | 8 Comments

OscillationWhen I began solipsistic NATION I knew that I wanted to include interviews in the show but I didn’t want that to be the focus of the podcast. solipsistic NATION is all about the music, after all. But as the year went by I noticed that solipsistic NATION has had more and more interviews and they’ve been getting longer and longer. I don’t mind that so much as long as the interviews don’t dominate the show and I keep a balance between the music and the interviews. That said, today’s show is chock full of interviews.

We’ll talk with Ronnie Darko about his Scion CD Sampler v. 18: Ninja Tune Mix. D Kay tells us all about his debut release, Individual Soul, a drum and bass album he recorded using real drums and real bass, as well as horns on keyboards. We’ll also talk with Brian about the Oscillation 2007 Electronic Music Festival that takes place in New Mexico this weekend.

If you happen to be in the south west this weekend then get your ass to the Oscillation 2007 Electronic Music Festival. The festival features 16 acts from all different genres of electronic music. They include Cyrkos, Nightmare Noise Machine, Erogenous, The Booty Green, Potential Ghost, Taiji Pole, Diverje, Vertigo Venus, Alan George Ledergerber, Autopoesis, Audio Buddha, Raine Vivian, Dirty Birdies, brian botkiller, Nanocrack and zRAM.

Oscillation and DarkoThis week solipsistic NATION I’m also giving away a few copies of Darko’s Scion CD Sampler v. 18: Ninja Tune Mix and Brian’s compilation CD of the bands who will appear at Oscillation 2007 Electronic Music Festival. Email me at solipsisticnation@gmail.com or leave a voice mail at 1-619-377-0538 and tell me which CD you’d like and they’re yours to rock out to! Well, until I run out of CDs, that is.
