Top 5 for 2007!

December 30, 2007

Top 5 Downloads for 2007This is the time of year that when I visit my favorite record stores I read the lists the employees have made out for their top 10 albums of 2007. In this age of downloading songs from albums à la carte, are such lists even relevant?

Glancing at my selection of songs that I have rated the highest or played the most in the last year I see that Ooah’s “Hacksaw” single made the top of my list. Immediately after is a few songs from Little Dragon, The Other Guy and quite a few songs from Amon Tobin’s Foley Room CD. They’re all great songs but I rarely listen to them in the context of an album. I honestly couldn’t tell you what my top 10 electronic music albums for 2007 are.

That said, here are my top 5 electronic music songs for 2007:

  1. Ooah “Hacksaw”
  2. Amon Tobin “Straight Psyche”
  3. Evan Marc “Silver”
  4. Little Dragon “Twice”
  5. The Other Guy “Rockin Chairs”

As long as we’re on the topic of top 5s, below is a list of the top 5 most downloaded editions of solipsistic NATION. If you’re new to the podcast and want to get an idea of what the show is about, this is a good place to start.

  1. solipsistic NATION No. 56: Cheb i Sabbah
An interview with Cheb i Sabbah and a retrospective mix of his musical career so far.

    Download episode.
  2. solipsistic NATION No. 46: Grime + Dubstep = GrimeStep
A great overview of the emerging genre of Grimestep with an interview with Grimestep International’s Leo Olofsson and the lads from The UK Connection.

    Download episode.
  3. solipsistic NATION No. 64: Dub Beautiful Collective
Live electronic music from Nalepa, gasp, Aes Dana and more! Plus, an interview with Maer of the Dub Beautiful Collective.

    Download episode.
  4. solipsistic NATION No. 43: digITAL
Long time listeners of solipsistic NATION know that I love dub and this particular show got mega downloads.

    Download episode.
  5. solipsistic NATION No. 67: Hol Baumann, Live
I naturally think that solipsistic NATION is unique amongst electronic music podcasts and one reason is that I often feature recordings of live performances on the show from artists such as Deru and Robert Rich. This set by Ultimae Records recording artist, Hol Baumann, was a hit with a lot of people.

  6. There you have it: my top 5 lists for 2007. I guess my resolution for 2008 is to take care to track my top 5 electronic music albums for the year.

    Ciao!
