February 22, 2008

SparkI’m very excited about today’s show because as of this week, solipsistic NATION is being broadcast on KYOU Open Source Radio on 1550 AM in San Francisco.

I’d like to thank KYOU’s station manager, Stephen Page, from bringing me on board. I’d also like to think all of you who are listening, whether you’re listening to solipsistic NATION over the airwaves in San Francisco or those of you who have downloaded the show from all over the world.

I’ve got a jam packed show for you!

This week on solipsistic NATION we’ll talk with J. Anthony Allen, the Director of Programming for the Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art taking place at the University of Minnesota, February 26 through March 2.

We’ll also talk to to Professor Diana Deutsch from the University of California, San Diego’s psychology department, about musical illusions and paradoxes, phantom words and other curiosities.

We’ll also chat with Robbie Martin, who performs experimental electronic music under the name Fluorescent Grey and runs Record Label Records.

Hi man, I just wanted to say thanks for the interview. It turned out great. And imagine my surprise when I heard that you were interviewing one of my favorite musicians, Diana Deutsch! I seriously didn’t know anybody else had heard of her, she is super obscure but imo made one of the most fascinating music cds ever released. Her phantom words cd is one of the only musical pieces literally able to put my mind into a psychedelic state without the aid of chemicals. I tried getting in contact with her once to see if she was interested in releasing an EP or something on Record label records but she declined and seems really into her own thing. How did you get hooked up with Diana? Cool man I just have to say thanks again and cant wait to come on again in the summer time!

Note: I forgot to mention that the song you play at the beginning of the broadcast is mislabeled, due to a misprint on the actual cd packaging. The track you played is actually called ‘palette swap dub’ , which probably makes more sense to you since it is a dub song, hehe. But if you want to correct it you can switch it out with the real ‘physically modeled theme for children’ which is currently mislabeled on the cd as ‘palette swap dub’ I hope I didn’t just confused the shit out of you.

    Hi Robbie,

I found out about Diana while listening to one of my favorite podcasts, Radio Lab. They did an episode about musical language that featured a segment on Diana. I’ve always wanted to work her into solipsistic NATION and as this week’s show came together with my interview with J from the Spark Festival and yourself, I had just the excuse I needed.

Ugh, Sorry about the confusion with the songs. I’ll update my website when I get home with the proper song title. I’ll also make the correction on solipsistic NATION (next week’s show has already been recorded and mixed, sorry).

Thanks again for coming on the show and sharing your music. I’m really looking forward to having you back on solipsistic NATION this summer so we can talk about Record Label Records.

    ciao!
    Bazooka Joe

[...] me his latest album Gaseous Opal Orbs. I enjoyed his CD so much that I had him on the show as a guest. I twas only then I found out that Robbie is the founder of Record Label Records. That’s one of theindie label that features such artists as Scorn, Kush Arora ( who I’ve also had on the show as a guest, by the way) and Sote. I like Robbie’s label because he features music by artists who fall on theexperimental side of electronic music but lacks the pretension of your more artier musicians. There seems to be an element of playfulness and adventurousness than your typical soundsmiths who are usually over serious.Fluorescent Grey w/Laurie AK “Pea Leery”Kush Arora “Surya Dub”Scorn “Pin Down”Fluorescent Grey “Blue Glue”Interview with Robbie Martin of Record Label RecordsNommo Ogo “Induction (Excerpt)”Fluorescent Grey “Hold Down + HK + START to Play as Kintaro”Lich “Shadow Men”Tomoroh Hidari “Shranzhall”Contagious Orgasm w/ Jiver Dicker “A1″Fluorescent Grey “EBM Nightmare”Dalglish “16b”Interview with Robbie Martin of Record Label RecordsScuzi “Vanishing Twin Syndrome”Kush Arora “Garage Riddim”Sote “Trip”Nommo Ogo “Aisha”Interview with Robbie Martin of Record Label RecordsDownload episode.1:03:44 | 58.43 MBSponsor: eMusicTags: eMusic, Record Label Records [...]
