solipsistic NATION No. 13: The New Bin
November 24, 2006
When I was a deejay at WMFO it was always a joy to check the new bin. The new bin was where we stocked all the recent CD and vinyl releases. Each week I’d go through the new bin to pick the stand-out tracks that I wanted to play on my show. The new bin made every week seem like a combination of my birthday and Christmas.
The other thing that made the new bin so much fun was trying to create a show that flowed together incongrously despite all the different genres I was attempting to mix together. Was is possible to create a show with segues with dub, country, techno, hip hop, alternative rock, etc that sounded seamless?
This week we’re going to go through all the CDs that have been sent to the solipsistic NATION studios here in beautiful San Diego.

fantastic show, joe!!! you’re getting some amazing stuff mailed to you. mouse on mars is one of my absolute favorites. they put on a great live show - impossible to sit still when they’re on the stage. the new junior boys stuff sounds totally different from their first album, but still good. and you can never go wrong with four tet, whether as remixer or being remixed.
long live the new bin, i agree. this one’s a keeper.
Jason,
Awww, man, you got to see Mouse on Mars?! I’m so envious. I’ve been a fan pretty much since day one.
I didn’t mention this on the show but while MoM is awlays experimenting with their sound didn’t it seem like their last CD, Radical Connector, owed a lot to Basement Jaxx? I’d be curious to hear your opinion on this,
I’ve heard of Junior Boys before but this is the first time I’ve listened to their music. I checked out their last album and it seems to have more of an 80’s retro feel. I thought “In the Morning” was the stand-out track on their latest disc.
And, yeah, Four Tet always rock the bells. I have to imagine there’s a Four Tet/Cinema Orchestra remix album out there. If there isn’t, there should be.
Thanks for the kind worlds and as always, have a great weekend!
ciao,
Bazooka Joe
mouse on mars taking cues from basement jaxx…now there’s an interesting theory. no doubt radical connector was more accessible for them, but it still had that mouse on mars feel to it. weird. your take on the sound is plausible, given the vocal cuts in which niobe sang (she does sort of bring to mind the lead vocalist on “red alert” from jaxx’s remedy album). “send me shivers” has that feel to it, as well as the closing track. even “spaceship,” for that matter. alright, now i’ve gotta hear that album again…lol…
i saw m.o.m. touring for idiology, but junior boys opened for them during their radical connector tour. caught j.b. at an in-store appearance and they sounded great. the first album from j.b., last exit, is rather addictive. they’re full on ’80s with the new album, but the first one is driven by a new school r&b undercurrent. it’s almost as if new order had been produced by timbaland or something…
Oh, yeah, Mouse on Mars is distinctive, whatever they do. Radical Connector definitely has MoM warped finger prints all over it but it did have a Basement Jaxx feel to it, especially the song “Evoke An Object.”
My favorite album by them is Autoditacker because it sounds like music made by happy machines. Iaora Tahiti is still a great album which I’m very sentimental about but I don’t think its as full an album as Autoditacker. Other albumes like Idiology and Niun Niggung are fantastic as well because they keep on reinventing themselves and pushing themselves creatively but Autoditacker is still my favorite disc.
Junior Boys represent an idea I’m still trying to resolve, which is artists who make use of cheap sounds. Sounding cheap is like wlaking a tight rope: if you get it right it sounds fantastic but if you get it wrong it sounds awful. Junior Boys got it right with “In the Morning.” The rest of the album is good but to me that’s the stand out track.
So, what’s been your favorite electronic live shows? Mine is Meat Beat Manifesto during their Satyricon tour and Ministry from their The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste tour.
okay, now i’m envious. MBM while touring for Satyricon?!? that must have been insane. i think my wife caught the same Ministry tour that you did - she was always a big fan of theirs.
for me, the Mouse On Mars show definitely ranks up there. other faves include…
Moby & Altern-8 @ Nasa’s Mask-A-Rave, 10/30/92
(my first rave ever…)
Roni Size/Reprazent @ Central Park Summerstage
(shortly before 2nd album came out)
Squarepusher and Anti-Pop Consortium
(part of a Warp festival that hit NYC. both were great. no one was more upset than me when APC went splitsville…)
The Legendary Pink Dots
(they’re one of my favorite ensembles. i first got into their work during my sophomore year of high school. to finally see them live in 2004 was a real treat. they were nothing short of mesmerizing…)
I saw MBM twice during their 99% tour and while I enjoyed the show it didn’t compare to the Satyricon.
Consolidated was the opening act and during the day my buddy Kenny and I met them at the club to say hello. I showed up eating a Burger King Whopper, which didn’t go over so well with the Consolidated folks, vegetarians that they are. Anyway, later that evening I was ripped out of my skull and compunded things by drinking shot after shot of whiskey and the multimedia concert of Consolidated and MBM absolutely blew me away.
After the show my old soundman, Harry, drove me home. I staggered up the stairs to my apartment, threw up and passed out in my own vomit. Not a proud moment but you do these sort of things when you’re young and dumb. At least I did. My girlfriend at the time came home form the nightclub we worked at and got me into the bath tub and cleaned me up/ Surely the last thing she wanted to do after being coated with cigarette smoke and beer swill.
The Ministry show was just awesome! They did covers of Skinny Puppy’s “Smothered Hope”, Magazine’s “The Light Pours Out of Me” and Pailhead’s “Man Should Surrender” and RevCo’s “Stainless Steel Provider.” At one point the crowd got crazy and toppled the chainlink fence by the stage. What a great show!
I knew about The Legendary Pink Dots for a long time but didn’t get into them until late in the game. I only wished I could have seen them live! I have yet to see a live drum and bass show so I’ll have to take your word that Roni Size rocked the bells when you saw him in concert.
